Tutorial – Vines & Cartoons with Illustrator’s Stroke Width Tool

Soooo… you dont have a Wacom Tablet and you want variable widths on your stroked objects in illustrator. CS5 to the rescue!

Adobe has been kind enough to create this wonderful tool called Stroke Width. Just create your shape (vines, cartoon character ect.) and click on this little guy shown to the left.

Subaru’s 2011 Mediocrity Marketing Campaign

New Mac icons for Microsoft Office 2011

So the new Microsoft Office 2011 for mac is out. It has some promising updates and rumors are that it runs a lot better too. What caught my eye though was the new branding for Office 2011. Microsoft hired well known product design company Frog to come up with the new look (for more on this check out microsoft office redesigning and icon).

Now Lets check out what LOOKS different about Microsoft Office 2011.

Website:

Microsoft Office Mac 2011 website looks like the evil twin of Apple.com The design is very slick taking lots of queues from what apple has done in branding their website.

Loading Graphic:

The application loading graphic hasn’t changed much. I was kind of disappointed. Below is words loading graphic comparison. I really would have liked to have seen it break from such a simple shape. Adobe CS5 loading graphics are amazing.

In my opinion this is the best Microsoft Office icons have looked. Frog did a really great job creating simple clean but powerful looking icons. The new icons in my opinion give off the idea that this software package is professional, slick, and is at the top of the game. Below are the side by side comparisons of each programs icon. You can see they went from shiny plastic toy, too matte and understated… letting the bold color speak for itself.

Conclusion:

Overall i like the new direction… my only complaint is the loading screen graphics. What do you think? Do you have any comments suggestions ideas of what microsoft could have done different? Do you think going with Frog helped them create a new and improved look?
